How to Keep Ants Out of Pet Food
When ants invade your pet's food, the pet may refuse to eat. Find out how to correct this problem and prevent it in the future. The key is to create a 'chemical safe' barrier which the ants will not cross and yet will not be harmful to your pets, wild birds or any other animals you wish to feed.- Store extra food in sealed containers. Any air tight container will work. Example: Coffee cans, Tupperware, zip-lock bags, any type of container that will keep the ants out.
- Go to the pet feeding area and make sure that there are no more morsels or crumbs of food on the floor. Crumbs left behind will entice ants to return.
- Clean the entire area with soapy water. The soap will remove the scent of ant trails. You might want to return in a few hours and re-wash with clear water to remove any chemical sent left behind.
- Set the clean food dish in a pan of water, not too deep (such as a cake pan). The pan of water will act as a moat and keep the ants out.
- Set the dish/ moat combination in a different area for two days or more. The ants will eventually quit returning to the normal feeding place.
